Professor Mihaly discovered in the 1970s that most people are exhausted after a day of work, but some people are still energetic after working all day. You might wonder: Aren’t these people working? Shouldn’t they be consuming energy? Where does the mental energy come from?
So he began to study people who are particularly “creative,” such as top athletes, musicians, and scholars. Everyone mentioned that they sometimes have those energetic states. At that time, Professor Mihaly interviewed a famous piano composer, who described his feelings when composing:
I enter a state of ecstasy, at that time, I can’t feel myself, I don’t seem to exist at all, my hands seem to be unrelated to my will, I sit there with reverence and peace, and the music just flows from my hands naturally. It “flows” from my hand.
In 1975, Professor Mihaly first published his research on this mysterious phenomenon and gave it a very vivid name: “flow.”
Damn! This 4-day holiday I stayed up all night, just wanting to escape from Medium, this temporary writing shelter! So I really entered a flow state! In the middle, I inexplicably recorded a Podcast episode on flow theory and financial management. I think I’m really sick! And really quite sick. This is flow theory! Throw yourself into something you really want to do, and constantly receive feedback and achievement. There may be discomfort during the process, but as long as the sense of purpose is strong, it is easier to enter a flow state.
